Find Your Own Writing Routine I once had a writer friend whose entire writing routine was comprised of rules hed learned from successful authors. He got up early to write because thats what the successful authors did. He outlined on index cards because hed read somewhere that certain successful authors did it that way. He used a certain kind of pen because some author declared it to be lucky. The list went on and on. The thing was, very few of these routines worked for my friend. He was not an early riser by nature and hated getting up so early. He didnt like to outline, felt it was stifling, but did it anyway. These things werent fun or useful for him, but he kept doing them because he believed that the only way to attain success was to follow what others had already done. He was trying to imitate the success of others rather than finding his own path. If you look through history, though, (and not just that of writers and writing) youll find that the most successful people are usually the ones who did things their own way. Walt Disney, George Lucas, J.K. Rowling, and Steve Jobs are just a few examples of people who said, Screw it, to the conventional wisdom and went out and did things their own way. They didnt follow the rules and rituals of others before them. They did what worked for them. Doing what works for you is the only way to succeed. You have to work with your strengths, talents, and motivations. Someone elses motivations and rituals are not yours. Sure, you may be able to derive some value from studying the greats, but ultimately you have to find your own path. Anything else just smacks of desperation and a lack of creativity on your part. Worse, readers, agents, and publishers will smell the desperation all over your work because it wont be unique. This applies not only to your writing life but also to what you choose to write. Dont spend time chasing the hottest trends in plots and writing styles. By the time your work is ready for submission, that fad will have rolled on. Write the story you have to tell, even if its not hot. Who knows? You might start the next big trend. Dont be derivative, be yourself. Sure, there are some rules you have to follow. You have to stick with basic grammar and structure (there are exceptions, but you have to be really exceptional to pull it off). You have to follow basic submission guidelines and rules if you want to be taken seriously. You have to act professional and meet your deadlines. But anything else is up to you to decide. If you try to do what others have done, you just end up hemming yourself in with a set of rules and regulations that you dont even need. When your schedule reads, Get up early, outline on index cards, use a certain pen, and write exactly 1,000 words per day, theres no room for you to shine through. What happens if the work is going great and you want to write 2,000 words? What happens if you skip the outline? What if you never discover that youre better off writing between 9 p.m. and midnight? There are enough rules in writing that you must follow. You dont need to create an even smaller cage by following the rituals of others. Find your own rituals. Embrace your personal quirks. Learn to love your best rhythm, even if it means writing all day long without a break. (Not advisable, but if it works) Dont believe people who tell you something cant be done just because its never been done before. (Someone always has to be first.) Do what makes you the most comfortable. When you are comfortable, youll do your best work and it will be uniquely yours. When youre imitating someone else, youre doing just that: imitating. Kubla Khan, Or, Not a Romantic Poem. A Fragment - Literature Essay Samples

In the preface to the second edition of his book Lyrical Ballads, William Wordsworth, famed romantic poet, wrote down his definition of romanticism and classifications of romantic poetry. To be considered romantic, in Wordsworth’s eyes, a poem had to be the result of an â€Å"overflow of emotion, recollected in tranquility† until the relevant emotion exists in the author’s mind at the time of writing (Wordsworth). It should be thought about â€Å"long and deeply† so that it has â€Å"a worthy purpose†, and so that the feeling that the author recounts gives meaning to the subject of the poem, not the other way around (Wordsworth). Finally, it should dwell upon â€Å"ordinary incidents and situations† from â€Å"humble and rustic life†, made interesting by â€Å"certain colorings of the imagination,† and related in the language of the common man (Wordsworth). Many poems that are considered romantic in the modern day do indeed foll ow Wordsworth’s guidelines. However, Kubla Khan, by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, is a notable exception. If the urban legends surrounding the writing of this poem, perpetuated by Coleridge himself, are to be believed, then it fails Wordsworths first criteria for romantic poetry. Coleridge isn’t reflecting in tranquility, he is caught up in the moment, attempting to describe a dream. One can argue that a dream is indeed a spontaneous overflow of emotion, but it is not meditated upon by the dreamer, it is spit straight from the subconscious. Therefore, it could not be a poem â€Å"to which any value can be attached,† as Coleridge has not â€Å"thought long and deeply,† (Wordsworth). However, it is also possible the circumstances of writing are indeed more mundane and Coleridge simply made up the story of being interrupted while attempting to describe his opium dream to explain why the poem seems so disjointed and fragmented. This seems plausible given the polished nature of the poem, its fairly consistent meter and rhyme scene, and the ending lines, which do not read as if someone was interrupted, but rather ring with finality, â€Å"For he on honey-dew has fed, / and drunk the milk of Paradise,† (Coleridge 53-54). If this is true, it does seem that the poem represents an overflow of emotion, as expressed in a dream and the rush that one feels upon waking from a particularly vivid vision, reflected upon later in tranquility until the emotions conjured by the dream were conjured again in the author and the reader, upon writing and reading respectively. Therefore, whether or not Kubla Khan fulfills Wordsworth’s first criteria is a bit ambiguous. The second criteria is also somewhat concerned with the circumstances wherein the poem was written. One can argue that it is the feeling of the poem that gives Coleridges subject, which pretty much comes out of left field if one is expecting standard romantic poetry, meaning. His dreamscape wouldn’t have any worth to the reader did his somewhat scattered and nonsensical description of Xanadu not evoke powerful emotions. As Wordsworth says, â€Å"the feeling therein developed gives importance to the action and situation, and not the action and situation to the feeling.†Nonetheless, it does not seem that in Wordsworth’s eyes being moving and capturing one’s imagination would give this poem a â€Å"worthy purpose,† (a â€Å"worthy purpose being that â€Å"the understanding of the Reader must necessarily be in some degree enlightened, and his affections strengthened and purified,†) and therefore wouldn’t fulfill his second criteria. Measuring the poem against the third criteria is potentially the most interesting. Kubla Khan seems to have no relation to the common and ordinary life of men in romantic times. It concerns a Mongol emperor, who most common people, the people whose language and life Wordsworth says romantic poetry should be based on, probably wouldn’t know. Furthermore, it repeatedly strays from the â€Å"plainer and more empathetic language,† Wordsworth advocates for, using phrases like, â€Å"sinuous rills,† and â€Å"ceaseless turmoil seething â€Å" (Wordsworth, Coleridge 8, 17). Moreover, it isn’t concerned with rustic activities, made interesting by imagination; it is a creation of Coleridge’s imagination (with some help from history), inherently wild and interesting. Nonetheless, it does utilize the descriptions of nature prevalent in most romantic poetry, especially Wordsworth’s own. This fascination with the power and beauty of the natural world is where Kubla Khan most closely resembles what Wordsworth would consider true romantic poetry. Romantic poems in the Wordsworthian style are often very concerned with the dichotomy of civilization and nature, a dichotomy that the common people whose lives Wordsworth believed poetry should be relevant to and written in the style of would be familiar with (which is why this consideration is included in the category of the third criteria). This dichotomy is well represented in Kubla Khan. However, whereas in Wordsworth’s poetry, nature is often described as an escape from civilization, a place of peace and harmony, in Kubla Khan, the civilization within the walls of the â€Å"stately pleasure dome† is idyllic, â€Å"[] gardens bright with sinuous rills, / Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree ; / And here were forests ancient as the hills, / Enfolding sunny spots of greenery,† while the natural world outside of it is wild and full of power (2, 8-11). Coleridge describes the country outside Xanadu as â€Å"A savage place! as holy and enchanted / As eer beneath a waning moon was haunted / By woman wailing for her demon-lover!† (14-16). Therefore, though one could argue that Kubla Khan’s focus on the natural world makes it somewhat more relatable to the common people of the romantic era, it still doesn’t deal with nature in the classic, romantic way and therefore one would be hard pressed to argue it fulfills Wordsworthâ⠂¬â„¢s third criteria. When compared to the Wordsworthian definition of a romantic poem, it doesn’t seem logical for Coleridge’s Kubla Khan to be classified as such. Though one could argue there is some relation to the genera given the poems concern with the dichotomy of nature and civilization, there doesn’t seem to be tension within the poem as it attempts to reconcile its subject and inspiration with the standards of the romantic poetry genera it truly seems to be the antithesis of Wordsworth’s three criteria. This doesn’t mean that romantic is not a useful category for poetry; there are lots of poems that fit Wordsworth’s definition quite well, it simply means that Kubla Khan, as it was not written in tranquility, has no â€Å"worthy purpose,† was not written in plain language, and is not concerned with common pursuits, cannot be considered a romantic poem by the Wordsworthian definition. How to Use phpMyAdmin for Your Database

Abhilash writes I am using phpMyAdmin†¦ so how can I interact with the database? Hi Abhilash! phpMyAdmin is a great way to interact with your database. It allows you the flexibility of using the interface, or simply using SQL commands directly. Lets take a closer look at how to use it! First navigate to your phpMyAdmin login page. Enter your username and password to access your database. Now that you have logged in, you will see a screen that has all of your databases basic information. From here there are several things you can do. Lets say you want to run a bit of SQL script. On the left hand side of the screen, there are some small buttons. The first button is a home button, then an exit button, and the third is a button that reads SQL. Click on this button. This should prompt a popup window. Now, if you wish to run your code you have two options. Option one is to type or paste in the SQL code directly. The second option is to choose the Import Files tab. From here you can import files full of SQL code. Often when you download software they will include files like this to help you install it. Another thing you can do in phpMyAdmin is browse your database. Click on the database name in the left hand column. It should expand to show you a list of tables within your database. You can then click on any of the tables it contains. There are several tabs of options on the top of the right page now. The first option is Browse. If you select browse, you can view all of the entries in that table of the database. You can edit, or delete entries from this area of phpMyAdmin. It is best not to change data here if you arent exactly sure what its doing. Only edit what you understand because once deleted it is irreversible. The next tab is the Structure tab. From this table you can view all of the fields within the database table. You can remove or edit the fields from this area too. You can also change the data types here. The third table is the SQL tab. This is similar to the pop up SQL window that we discussed earlier in this article. The difference is that when you access it from this tab, it already has some SQL pre-filled in the box pertaining to the table from which you accessed it. The forth tab is the Search tab. As its name implies this is used to search your database, or more particularly the table form which you accessed the tab. If you access the search feature from the main phpMyAdmin screen you can search all of the tables and entries for your entire database. This is a very useful feature, that could be completed using only SQL but for many programmers as well as non-programmers its nice to have the simple to use interface. The next tab is Insert which allows you to add information to your database. It is followed by the Import and Export buttons. As they imply they are used to import or export data from your database. The Export option is particularly useful, as it allows you to make a backup of your database from which you can restore if you ever have an issue. It is a good idea to backup data often! Empty and Drop are both potentially dangerous tabs, so please use them with caution. Many a novice has clicked through these tabs only to have their database disappear into the great unknown. Never delete unless you are absolutely sure it wont break things! Hopefully that gives you some basic ideas of how you can use phpMyAdmin to work with the database on your website.

Aemilia Lanyers, `The description of Cooke- ham, and Ben Jonsons, `To Penshurst namely represent the small genre which flourished so briefly. These poems are much more than domestic architecture and are more than simple exercises in praising and pleasing a wealthy patron and the readership at large. In country- house poetry, poets use the conjunction of the ideal family (the patrons) and the ideal site (the estate and surrounding areas in which the patron and his/her family live) as a means of reflecting on social values, the nature of the good life, and the ways in which other households fall short of the mark. Lanyer memorialises her time with Margaret and her daughter Anne Clifford at the estate of Cookham Dean, Her parents died when Lanyer was still a child and she was fostered to different families on numerous occasions.
